Each year the 3rd graders from each of the 3 elementary campuses in our district compete in a chess tournament. Thomas learned a lot about how to play chess in 2nd grade and occasionally practices, mostly on the iPad or computer.
On the day of the competition each student gets a card to keep track of their wins and losses. The students that have all wins at the end of 4 rounds are the winners. Time does not permit for more games, which would narrow the number of winners.
Thomas concentrated very hard on his strategy ~ and it paid off!
After each round the kids change places according to whether they won or lost the previous games. With almost 300 kids playing, it was neat that Thomas ended up sitting next to, but not competing against, his friend Allie (who goes to another elementary in town)!
I love how Thomas is giving me the "Mom, STOP taking my picture" look!
After the 4th round, Thomas had all wins!
All of the winners received a $10 gift card from Wal-Mart, and if their name was drawn they could be one of 10 winners that also got a game. Thomas was the next to last name drawn!
Very proud of our little chess player!
